As a small business incubator, the Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District (SID) Pearl Market provides an opportunity to learn about retail sales and marketing in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. The Pearl Market is conveniently located in Columbus, along the alleys between Broad, High, Gay, and Third Streets. The Markets operate 10:30-2:00 p.m. each Tuesday and Friday during the season from mid-May to October.
As a retail outlet for customers, the primary objective is to develop a merchant mix that reflects the rich cultural diversity of Central Ohio, including immigrant entrepreneurs from all over the world. The City of Columbus has endorsed the Markets because of the positive microenterprise environment.
Shoppers include: · 35,000 office workers · 1,000 hotel guests · 600 nearby apartment dwellers
These consumers can enjoy: · baked goods, fresh produce, specialty foods and drinks · health and beauty products · cards and small gift items · garden/home décor and supplies · arts and crafts · fashion and entertainment items
During the 2007 Markets season, consumers spent $64,726.66 in the Markets, averaging $578.80 per day.
Many vendors are entrepreneurs just beginning to integrate small business operations into their existing livelihoods. One ECDI customer has steady income from a packing job, but is gaining valuable business skills as a vendor in the Markets. After more experience and success, he will use another ECDI microenterprise loan to open his own store, and work full-time selling goods from his home.
Organizations around the country are beginning to use the Markets as a model for their communities. "People can’t make a living unless they have a market for their goods. This Columbus effort is being held up as a model for the country," said Daniel Krotz, of the Institute for Social and Economic Development.
